THE BEAUTY OF AMBIGUITY

I just love language ambiguities, don t you? Check this out...

As any experienced conversationalist can tell you, ambiguity is the key to winning any argument. Following are a few popular proverbs and counter-proverbs that will allow you to turn a conversation in any direction you want. Who can argue with the wit and wisdom of our fore fathers?

  • Actions speak louder than words. The pen is mightier than the sword.
  • Look before you leap. He who hesitates is lost.
  • Many hands make light work. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
  • Clothes make the man. Don t judge a book by its cover.
  • Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Better safe than sorry.
  • The bigger, the better. The best things come in small packages.
  • Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Out of sight, out of mind.
  • What will be, will be. Life is what you make it.
  • Cross your bridges when you come to them. Forewarned is forearmed.
  • What s good for the goose is good for the gander. One man s meat is another man s poison.
  • With age comes wisdom. Out of the mouths of babes come all wise sayings.
  • The more, the merrier. Two s company; three s a crowd.

If anyone wants to read more of these, from fantastic angles, esp for advanced sts, check out this site http://www.gray-area.org/Research/Ambig/ ! Talk about a eacher s paradise of inspiration!

bye, bye

Dear Anita,

I m also a big fan of ambiguity. I ve always been quick at spotting and analyzing ambiguous images and statements in literature.

Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful site.
In addition to the Proverbs part, I liked the " What do they mean?" Part.

What do they mean!?

  • AUTOMATIC WASHING MACHINES: PLEASE REMOVE ALL YOUR CLOTHES WHEN THE LIGHT GOES OUT
  • On a church door: THIS IS THE GATE OF HEAVEN. ENTER YE ALL BY THIS DOOR. (THIS DOOR IS KEPT LOCKED BECAUSE OF THE DRAFT. PLEASE USE SIDE DOOR.)
  • Outside a secondhand shop: WE EXCHANGE ANYTHING - BICYCLES, WASHING MACHINES, ETC. WHY NOT BRING YOUR WIFE ALONG AND GET A WONDERFUL BARGAIN?
  • Outside a photographers studio: OUT TO LUNCH: IF NOT BACK BY FIVE, OUT FOR DINNER ALSO.
  • Spotted in a safari park: ELEPHANTS PLEASE STAY IN YOUR CAR
  • Notice in a field: THE FARMER ALLOWS WALKERS TO CROSS THE FIELD FOR FREE, BUT THE BULL CHARGES
  • Message on a leaflet: IF YOU CANNOT READ, THIS LEAFLET WILL TELL YOU HOW TO GET LESSONS
  • Sign on a repair shop door: WE CAN REPAIR ANYTHING. (PLEASE KNOCK HARD ON THE DOOR - THE BELL DOESN T WORK)

Hugs,

Nebal
