When I was in elementary school knickers were a type of short pants that ended just below the knee (not underwear).

I use the word knickers... I feel silly using the word panties even though it is a normal word for undergarments. We also use the general term of underwear.

Panties is rarely used in casual conversation by NS downunder. We usually say knickers or undies for female underwear and jocks , boxers or undies for male underwear.
Advertisments, however, usually use more formal words like briefs .

In the US we do not use the term knickers. They are underwear, panties, undershorts, underpants, boxers, or boxer shorts to name a few. |
