Let me just add another usage:
 
if you use this term as a noun phrase like "stand-fast", it means �being ready � or �stand by �
 
ex) While doing a voluntary rescue service in a danger area, if an alert comes out, action manual comes as below...
1) Precautionary =>  2) Stand-fast =>  3) Assembly => 4)Evacuation
