Hi! ´Many a ´ is formal and more commonly used at an advanced level. We can use it with a singular noun and verb to mean a large number of, in this case is talking about  the amount of time. Smile

Many a time is commonly used  to talk about past events which happened often.

eg.
Many a time we were forced to close the school due to freezing temperatures.
