remedial instruction

dear teachers,
could someone just briefly ( in few sentences ) explain to me what the function of remedial teaching is? Or, alternatively, recommend me some interesting short article about this approach? Unfortunately, I do not have time to read whole books.

I Googled it and found all these explanations.

remedial teaching is basically teaching pupils who need extra help.
Also students who have learning problems.
In my day, we went to Summer School to get extra teaching.
Today, kids are in smaller groups with a teacher and have help learning what ever they have a problem with - such as language or math.

Specialised instruction for students deviating from the expected norm.

It is teaching slow learners, children with learning disabilities, or  with special needs. It is usually applied by special education teachers and it is intended to help these children improve their skills at their own pace using personalised material and exercises.
