clear the board ?

I ve been wondering how I should ask my students if they have finished copying what s on the board because I need to erase it and write something else.
Is it Ok to say: Can I clear the board? or Is it Can I clean the board?
I have received these 2 versions from other teachers.
How do you say it?
Thanks ; )

Hi Chilvis,
You d normally say "Clean the board" or "wipe the board" but not "clear the board in this sense.
"clear the board" implies three dimensional objects being on the board eg; a chess board.

Hope this helps

Maybe you could use: "Hey guys, may I erase the board?!"
I think it s easier, they ll understand for sure and there s no doubt about it!

Dear Jayho,

You havent read the forum rules properly, huh?? Heres what youve missed:

Dont make non-native teachers unsure by using non-existent words in your worksheets or in the forum. It is forbidden under penalty of death.

This is my last warning before Im reporting you to Victor: dont write that word "exacatackly" ever again!!

Sorry for being so silly - just couldnt stop myself... Wink

Have a nice day - Silke
