If you "replace" something, generally you take away one item, and give back another.
You change one thing for another, or a second meaning would be to "put back".
E.G
I replaced the old DVD with a new one.
I replaced the book on the shelf.

1. to take the place of,
2.
to substitute a person or thing for (another) we need to replace that chair,

3.
to put (something) back in its rightful place,
