Greece

Although bibikos has answered for Greece, I think he/she confused some of the info. As I m a secondary state school teacher my answers reflect the state schools policies:

Students don t pay in state schools. They do have to pay for any trips, seminars or materials needed for extracurricular activities.

Students don t uniforms but the law says they should be decently dressed. Unfortunately they don t follow this rule most of the time

Do students buy lunch at school or bring lunch from home They can choose to do either but not all schools have a canteen.

Compulsory education ends at the completion of grade 9.

For teachers the school years begins on September 1st. For students it  starts on September 11 or the 1st working day after this Between the 2nd and the 9th students who failed the previous year are allowed to take an exam to see if they can go on to the next grade. Lessons for the year end around May 15th. The students then sit exams for about three weeks. Teachers work until June 30th.
A regular school day begins at 8:15 and ends at 2:05. There re 7 periods to a day. Specialised schools like music, art or athletic schools may be in school until 3 or 4 o clock.

The average number of students depends on
the population of the area. The law states 25 maximum in primary and 28 in secondary education. Usually big cities have 28 to a class while in rural areas it can be any number over 12 which is the minimum.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic - I am adding some more details to Misa s message:
In the Czech Republic:

1. There are 2% of students studying at the few private kindergartens/primary schools (only 2% of kindergartens and primary schools are private).

(one sixth) 14% college students aged 15-19 (20) study at private colleges (one fifth=22% of colleges are private). They usually pay 2-5 average monthly salaries for the schoolyear.

International (English) primary or secondary schools and colleges providing education in English/French/German only are extremely expensive - students pay an average monthly salary EVERY MONTH!
So basically the whole salary of the mother is sent to school to pay the fees... :-(

More than half of the universities are private, but they are quite new (the oldest is 20 years old.)
15% of all university students study at private universities. Fees vary - an average monthly salary per term up to 5-months-salary per term.

3. Lunch is the MAIN HOT MEAL of the day. There are usually 4 hot meals at the school canteen to choose from. The lunch consists of the soup followed by meat+side dish and vegetable salad /cake. Price is low - sponsored/subsidised by the government/state.

6. Grades One-Five aged 6-12 end at 12.00-13.00. Students study for 16 hours per week at school. (breaks excluded -pupils spend 20 hours weekly with breaks at school)
Pupils and students aged 12 or more end at 14.00-16.00. Students study up to 22 hours weekly at school.

7. College students aged 15-19/20  study for 4 years
. There are 25-30 students in class. Class divides in halves for the language lessons. So there are 15 students or less at the English lessons.
Students can study English from the first grade. However, they usually reach the pre-intermediate or high-elementary level at the age of 15.
NO films in English on TV, few graded readers and students DONT like reading, old-fashioned tv courses once a week ONLY. Students are not used to listening to stories in English although I love BBC radio dramas and audiobooks...

Belarus

A few words about Belarusian schools:

1. Do students pay school fees? No, they don t. Students of public schools don t pay any fees. They should pay for textbooks they use during the school year.

2. Do students wear uniforms? Actually, yes. But most our schools don t have strict uniforms, students should keep to dress code, the so called official style of clothing: no jeans, T-shirts, trainers, mini-skirts, piercing or tatoos.

3. Do students buy lunch at school or bring lunch from home? Students have lunch in the school canteen. Due to the policy of our Ministry of Education they all should get hot lunch, which consists of some meat or fish, pasta or vegetables and juice or tea.

4. When does compulsory education end? At the age of 15 or 16. It depends on when the child goes to school - at the age of 6 or 7. Children study 4 years at primary school, then they attend classes at secondary school next five years. So, compilsory education lasts nine years. Then students go to a college, a liceum or to high school. High school lasts two more years. After that they can enter a university or a college, or go to work.

5. When does the school year start and end? It starts on September 1st and ends at the end of May (May 30th this year). Students have three periods of vacations: a week in autumn (the first week on November), two weeks on Christmas (December 25th to January 7th), and a week in March. Teachers work on these vacations: we have individual classes with motivated students, do some paper work, read books on methodology and share our ideas. We usually have 56-days(!) vacations in summer.

6. What time does the school day start and end? It depends on the shift you work. Personally I work in two shifts: the first one in secondary school and the second in primary school. Sometimes my working day begins at 8 in the morning anf finishes at 6 in the evening. But most our teachers work 5-6 hours a day (not to mention the time they spend preparing for the lessons and grading students exercise-books.)

7. How many students are there in each class (average)? Usually about 20-25 students. To study foreign languages, each class is divided into three groups, 6-8 students each.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer the questions. I m sure my students will be very interested to learn about different school systems and different countries. It was wonderful to read all the answers and research all the amazing countries. Hopefully one day I will be able to visit some of these great places :)
I really appreciate your help!

Argentina

Hi from Argentina! Thank you for posting such an interesting issue!
1. Do students pay school fees? If it s private they do. If it s a public school they don t.
2. Do students wear uniforms?  If they go to private schools they wear uniforms. If they go to public school they wear white frocks (similar to the ones doctors wear)
3. Do students buy lunch at school or bring lunch from home?  At public schools they may have a cup of milk in the morning but they eat at home (most public schools have two different shifts: morning (students have lunch at home once their shift is over...) and afternoon (students have lunch at home before going to school). At private schools most of them pay for a monthly menu others take lunchboxes from home.
4. When does compulsory education end? When a student graduates from high school (students are17/18 years old)
5. When does the school year start and end? The school calendar runs from March til December
6. What time does the school day start and end? Private schools from around 7.30 /7.45 am til 4.30 pm and public schools (morning shift students)from around 7.30/7.45 am til around 1pm or (afternoon shift students) around 1.30/1.45 pm til around 6.30 pm. There are also some private schools (particularly parish schools) which also keep the morning and afternoon divisions. In many cases students who attend these schools have time to study other disciplines privately (piano, English, dance lessons) although in most cases they just stay at home...
7. How many students are there in each class (average)? An average of 30 students
Other relevant information:
Students stay in one classroom (not like in the States where students go to each of the teachers classroom). Teachers are the ones who rotate going from one classroom to another or even from one school to another! All subjects are compulsory. But students get to choose their high school orientation (whether they like science, social studies, art, etc) in many provinces.
I hope this is helful! Best wishes! Gabriela
