off to bed!

Hi dear friends!
I m analyzing the sentence "off to bed" and I m questioning myself whether "off" is used as an adv to intensify the expression or a fixed one Confused I mean.. can I say to a child for instance "to bed!"? mmm...
What do you think?
Do you know any links/books where I can check it?

thanks a lot in advance!

I don t see it as an intensifier - it s linked with the act of going, though it can be used to mean go now when speaking to children who are dawdling.
I use it this way:

I m off to work now, bye! = I m going to work now.
It s time for bed. Off you go.
Off you go to bed, there s school tomorrow.
Off to bed now, hurry up.
He s off on a trip to Tokyo tomorrow.
He drifted off to sleep.

I agree with Apodo, and see it as a directional word. We might also say "away".
