Hi everybody!

I need your kind help....again!
 
The question is which of these is the correct sentence:
 
THERE IS AN ORANGE AND A BANANA IN THE FRUIT BOWL.
THERE ARE AN ORANGE AND A BANANA IN THE FRUIT BOWL.

I believe the correct sentence is:
 
THERE IS AN ORANGE AND A BANANA IN THE FRUIT BOWL.
 
Even though there are two objects, "there are" can only be used when followed by a plural noun.
 
Another example:
 
There is a dog and two cats in the garden.
 
In this example, some people say both options are correct, because the second noun is plural
 
It �s a little bit odd, but that �s the way it is!
