dodgeball

I must ask my more knowledgeable friends for help again. This time the question is about the game that is played on the both sides of the Atlantic, namely dodgeball. I know that there are many varieties of the game, and thus there are different rules of play, but I believe that you would share your knowledge with me and help me.

Before the game commences, the two opposing teams are chosen. Each team picks up a person who will be playing behind the end line (on a dodgeball course). According to the rules of the dodgeball variety that we play in my school the player in question has 3 lives and "enters the game for real" when all his teammates are eliminated. When the player in question is hit by the ball 3 times, he loses all his lives and the game is over.

What do you call that player who has 3 lives?

Dear Jarek,

The only word that I can find in the Rules for the person at whom the ball is thrown, is, "The Target".

The only British word that occurs to me for a chosen Player in a children s game, is, "It".
