The best explanation I �ve read yet of the apparent ambiguity of �quite � in phrases where it might enhance ("she �s quite wonderful") or diminish ("it �s quite good"):

I think there was quite a discussion on this a quite a while back but I �m quite sure I �ll never find it again.  I do remember quite well that Brooce participated and it was about quite being an antagonym, not that that definition was used.  A member was not quite sure about how quite was used.  Quite a common problem, I think.
