A chant is one kind of song. It is usually done a capella (without instrumental accompaniment), is usually either religious or occult in nature, and usually has a pretty simple melody (but often ornate harmonies).

there are also grammar/vocabulary chants for language learners which are usually short, with lots of repetitions and rhythm.
