DILEMMA - HELP NEEDED

Hi,
Which sentence is correct?
Of the two students, Tom is the lazier.
Of the two students, Tom is the laziest.
Thanks in advance.

The "rules" of English say that with only two, it must be "lazier"; however, in practice, at least in the US, almost everyone says "laziest".

you arent comparing the two students ( John is lazier than Peter, for example ) what you mean is the superlative use, theres no comparison cause "a extreme quality" is being described.

@ florimago,
I totally disagree. "Of the two students" is explicitly stating that you are comparing the two students.
