Dear Araveg and ESLprintables community,

Here is my response to your call for grammar help.

Rules and examples:

Use of but and although in Clauses of Opposition (Contrast Clauses)

My sister was sick. She went to work.

These two sentences can be joined in one sentence with the connecting word but.

The second clause expresses the contrasting or unexpected result.

e.g.      My sister went to school, but she was sick.

Another connecting word (conjunction) is although. We use although at the beginning of a clause which contains information that contrasts in an unexpected or surprising way with the information in another clause.

e.g.      She went to work, although she was sick.

Although she was sick, she went to work.

Although something is true or accepted, another part of the problem or another view-point exists.

Use of since in Clauses of Cause (Reason) and Effect

A since-clause usually precedes the main clause. There is more interest in the main clause (effect) for the speaker/hearer than in the reason introduced by since.

e.g.      Since I am busy making Turkish coffee, I cannot answer the door.

Your first two sentences:

1-    My sister  was sick. she went to work anyway

Although my sister was sick,  she went to work.

2-   I  was feeling upset at the party. I went home  early at night.

Since I was feeling upset at the party, I went home early at night.

Recommendation: Allpy the grammar rules to the rest of your sentences. I will be happy to provide further comments on them.

Best,
