Please could someone assist with the following grammar question. 

They knew that the morning star and evening star were identical.

Why cant we say, 

They knew that the morning star and the evening star are identical. 

They knew the sun is made of hydrogen.
This sentence is past (knew) and present (is) 

Please could someone assist, thank you in advance.

General thruths usually don �t change the tense.
I think the sentence about the stars is part of a narration and not a general thruth.

I think Sophia has it right. It �s a difficult distinction. The writer just wanted to make a statement about the knowledge of these particular people, not the scientific information that the stars are identical.
