help needed please

Can you help me please choose the right alternative and the reasons for the choice : The sentence is about child labour . They wander homeless in the streets of Naples and khartoum and New York City, (survive / surviving / survived ) by begging and thieving.

The right choice would be surviving. In this case the present participle is used as an alternative to a say "while they are surviving" / "as they survive".

Likewise, we could paraphrase the sentence

I was strolling along the street, whistling happily

like this

I was strolling along the street and I was whistling happily.
