Help please: singular or plural?

Dear native speakers,

Could you help me with a question, please?
Which is correct?

1) between the First and Second World War or betweent he First and Second World Wars
2) between the 18th and 19 century or between the 18th and 19th centuries

I tend to think that the first solution in each example is correct (or standard) because the plural versions sound odd to me.
Could you please come up with your explanation?
Thank you.

Isa

Hi, Isa,

Confusion like this is often removed by removing the confusing words. If you reduce the phrases to "between the wars" and "beween the centuries", it is clear that the plural is needed.

I agree with Bruce. Since we have an and we have to use the plural If we had an    or we would use the singular (becasue it would be a choice between two things, this or that)
