Wow! Interesting Concept for teaching in Finland

Finland is doing away with "subjects" in its schools:

"...It s doing away with individual subjects. Instead, students will learn about broader topics that encompass a variety of those subjects. The newspaper provides an example: Students might be taught about the topic of the European Union, a lesson that would fold in elements of history, geography, foreign languages, and economics. Finnish educators call it "phenomenon teaching," and it s being slowly phased in among older students, especially in Helsinki. It s expected to be standard practice at all schools by 2020."

I d be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

Is it content-based instruction being introduced to the classrooms there?

Finland is doing away with "subjects" in its schools - I think that it is nothing more than a headline meant to impress. Cross curricular elements, i. e. crossover to other subject areas, have always been used, especially in project work. I don t think that subjects will be done away with completely any time soon, not in primary or elementary school anyway. IMHO, rather certain relevant subject areas will be incorporated into other content materials in higher levels of school education just as it s mentioned in the quote. On the other hand, students will still need advanced studies of subjects they need for their careers.

Very interesting.  However, we Montessori teachers have always been moving away from separate subjects.  I can t find the specific quote on it, but here s a good one.
