Communicative practice for Interchange Intro, Units 4 and 5 (present continuous, time zones, what are you wearing)

To practice the present continuous, colors, and "he is wearing ___," show students a police lineup and ask students to identify someone (who either did a certain crime or is involved in a particular activity, e.g., thinking about lunch or trying to look guilty, etc.). The student must identify the person by describing what he or she is wearing: She s wearing a dark skirt and a light blouse. Optionally, students could role play that one is going to pick the other one up at the airport and asks what the other is wearing, since they ve never met.

To practice the present continuous with time zones, ask students to solve puzzles in which they have to figure out who the most likely person is based on the time zone. "Where does [a particular person] live? Right now, it s dinner time." Or "If it s 5:00 a.m. in London, who is getting ready for bed right now?" (with four city options where only one is after 9 p.m). For some good ideas, see the reading guide for The Great Gilly Hopkins, by Colleen Dabney, page 24. "If Gilly flew from Dulles Airport at 10:30 A.M. EST for a 2-hour flight to Chicago, what time should she set on her watch?
