Who or What?

Hi dear friends!
Help me, please.
I show a picture of an animal to my pupil. What  should I ask without the word "animal" (What animal is it)?
What is it? or Who is it?
What question word do we use with animals? Could you give me a rule?
Sorry for my stupid question)
Thanks!

We use WHO with family pets, but WHAT with zoo animals, wild animals, farm animals, and animals in general.
A general rule would be if we love them, or have a personal relationship with them, we use WHO (even if they are work or farm animals).

If the animal has a name (e.g. Bob the goldfish) that is known tothe studentsthen you would say

Q: Who is this?
A: Its/Hes/Shes Bob (the goldfish)

If the animal does not have its own name (e.g. a goldfish) then you would say
Q: What is this?
A: Its a goldfish
Cheers,
AB

AB is right. If it has a personal name, use "who". If not, use "what".
