Fabulous! Seems like there s a cultural variation here and people mean different things by these words in Britain, the USA and Australia.

In the USA...

There is also a "Nerd" community.  Many people (such as myself) will take pride in the term "nerd" since it has become a way to refer to people who are very passionate about subjects such as Science Fiction.  The best example I can think of is the Californian Comic Con.
Topics considered "nerdy" include:
  • science fiction/ fantasy (like Harry Potter or Doctor Who)
  • anime (Japanese animation)
  • costuming (also called "cosplay")
  • video games
  • collective card games (like Magic the Gathering or Pokemon)
  • LARPing (live action role-playing)
  • Dungeons & Dragons
  • comic books
  • childhood nostalgia (such as Power Rangers or My Little Pony)
"Geek" is generally pejorative. It focuses mainly on school work academic achievement. Few people use this to describe themselves.
Topics considered "geeky" include:
  • computer programming
  • math
  • science
  • technology
