HELP

Hi everybody. I have a question concerning the use of two words.
If somebody wants to find out if the water is cold or hot which word would be correct:

to check the water
or
to try the water

I will be grateful for help.

Hi there.
Check the water is  the better answer.

"Check" is best, if you say "try" you are implying either tasting it or jumping in to it.

I agree that check is the better word choice, but you would probably also hear check the temperature to specify what you are checking the water for (temperature, chlorine content, etc.).

Douglas is right: If you told me to try the water to see if it was hot I would definitely think you wanted me to drink it.

You could use "test" instead of "check."
I agree with Douglas and Rabbit about "try."
