Hi there,

The first one seems better "while studying" or  "while s/he was studying" as while is commonly followed by Past Continuous. The second option would have been ok if "during" would have been followed by a noun - like his studies.

best, joanna :-)

While is followed by a clause (Subject and verb), for instance: while I was studying, I drank tea. During is followed by a noun. During studying, I drank tea. In this case studying takes the form of a gerund (ing- noun).

Here are some examples:

During lunch I had tea

During Skiing lessons, I went fishing.

While I was having lunch, I drank tea.

Hope this helps.

Elliot smith 1983 seems to be saying that the correct choice here is "during", but that is incorrect.

As joannajs was implying, the "studying" in this case is just a contracted form of "while s/he was studying", so "while" is definitely the correct choice.
