How do you write the following sentence?
|
Hi people, Is the following sentence correct? When are you next having a quiet night in? or can I write it differently? When are you having a quiet night in next? Thanks, Darija |

Hi Darija, As far as Im concerned I would write : And now when will you have a quiet night ? OR When are you going to have another quiet night ? OR Will you have / Are you going to have a quiet night after ? OR When will you enjoy another / a quiet night now ? Your sentence sounds as if you are expecting the person to plan this night ? Am I right ? And my question is "Can this person plan this quiet night ?" And in your 2nd sentence I feel the preposition "IN" as useless. Lets see what our "deer" experts will say ! Hugs to you and plenty of Light. Maryse. |

Hi Maryse! The task is from face2face workbook, intermediate: Make questions with these words: quiet / having / you next / When / a / night / in / are? In the key section they put: When are you next having a quiet night in? Hope this helps! |

Oh I see ! IN is for HOME of course ! And the word "TIME" is to be guessed after NEXT then. Well I remember that some words (particulary adverbs) "love to make an auxiliary and the 2nd element of the tense divorce" inserting themselves between these 2 parts. And as it is a question there is the subject too between ! Maryse. |

It would be more natural to say, "When is the next time you will have a quiet night in?" In the US, we would be more likely to say, "When is the next time you will spend a quiet night at home?" |

Dear Darija, I am happy with, (British English): "When are you next having a quiet night in?" = "When is the next time that you intend to stay at home, alone, and have a quiet night?" I hope that this helps you. Les Douglas

Agree with Les. It is absolutely the usual thing to say. When are you next having a quiet night in? |

Another Brit agreeing with my fellow Brits. Its perfectly fine to say "when are you next having a quiet night in?" |

Thank you! So, it would be wrong to put next at the end of the sentence? |

I wouldnt say that "next" at the end is wrong, but it definitely sounds awkward. Bruce |

It would not be wrong in terms of grammar, but it would not be natural (in British English). |
