Please tell me if we could write: He wished he had been able to go to the countryside last week.(Why don�t we use the third conditional?) |

Yes - he wished he had been able to go.... I think this is a bit better, actually. I am not sure what the third conditional is, hopefully someone else will comment. |

You can�t use a third conditional (if I had won the lottery last week, i would have been able to travel this week) because you don�t have the 2 needed clauses, you only know he was unable to go, then you need the wish clause in the sentence.
He wished he had been able to go the countryside last week. (Best)
He wished he could have gone to the countryside... (may also work) |
