Not such a huge difference... Here s an explanation from wikipedia...

noun of multitude (plural nouns of multitude)

  1. The name of something that contains many individual things or people. Examples: army, fleet, hundred.

collective noun (plural collective nouns)

  1. (grammar) A noun which, though singular, refers to a group of things or animals. Examples: a school of fish, a pride of lions.
