Find Your Partner Cards
I made these speaking cards for a game described on Daves ESL Cafe website called "Find Your Partner". I used information that my students shared about themselves from our first class. Give students three or four minutes to memorize their card. Take the cards away and have them recite what their card said. They must say it to each person in th...

American High School Cliques
This is a worksheet for intermediate-level students. I taught a thematic unit about American high school life (in contrast to Korean high school life). It is based on the stereotypes of cliques in American high schools. My students had a better understanding of different kinds of students after doing this worksheet.

The Verve Pipe: "The Freshmen"
I made this worksheet to accompany the song "The Freshmen" by the Verve Pipe. The songs overall message was challenging to my intermediate students. The main point they understood was that the two people in the song had a romantic relationship and something bad happened. I used this after showing a youtube video with the lyrics in English.

Speaking Evaluation Rubric
This is a speaking evaluation rubric based on which of my students skills I wanted to assess. The students did an oral presentation in teams. Most important was the students speech and sharing of responsibility. I wrote comments in the boxes, which was a bit time consuming. Hope this is helpful to you!

This is a vocabulary booklet I made to go along with a thematic unit. As students learn vocabulary, they write the word down, starting with a word that starts with "A". They then write the definition in English and draw a picture to retain what the word means. You can change the letters; I tried to use most of the alphabet. The cover page is th...

Dinner Party Icebreaker
I adapted this worksheet from one my colleague gave me. I changed many of the questions and will use it as an icebreaker in a three-week intensive language course.
Students make two lines of chairs facing each other. They talk to the partner in front of them about Topic #1 for one minute. The teacher says, "Change!" and the students move to the...

"Heartless" by Kanye West
I used this listening activity in a mixed-level English class. "Heartless" is a good song to teach ESL because the words are slow and it contains a lot of slang. I used this as an alternative to dictation, which my students hate. Also included are the songs lyrics.

Lady Gaga - Just Dance
Students filled in the missing words while listening to Lady Gagas "Just Dance." My high school students love her. The song lyrics are very fast, so I recommend the handout for upper intermediate to advanced students.
