Made in Dagenham
Made in Dagenham is a dramatisation of the real life 1968 workers’ strike at the Ford car factory in Dagenham, east London, where women workers went on strike in protest against sexual discrimination. Women sewing machinists, working long hours in bad conditions, voted to lay down their tools when their work was classified as ‘unskilled’, giving them the lowest rate of pay. The film shows aspects of life in Britain in the 1960s, and explores themes of gender roles, family relationships and social class. The film raises questions about a range of serious issues, but without feeling heavy-handed. This worksheet consists of 6 pages. Page 1 introduces the film and the cast. Pages 2 and 3 are comprehension questions and gap-fill completion tasks to be completed by students while watching. (The tasks are shared between the two pages. Students should work in pairs, one student with page 2, another with page 3, testing each other´s comprehension. If you have access to double-sided printing, put page 2 on the back of half the copies of page 1 and page 3 on the back of the other half of the copies of page 1.) Pages 4, 5 and 6 are story synopsis sheets for the teacher´s reference. Clearly, watching this film would go well with discussions of gender issues (especially women´s rights and gender-differentiated roles in families), workers´ rights in general, trade unions and social protest, and social classes in the UK.
