Juno
Juno (2007): Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, an offbeat 16-year old high school student makes an unusual decision about her unborn child in a comedy drama that got the Oscar for best original screenplay, and made a star of the titular star, Ellen Page. The script is by Diablo Cody, famous for an honest memoir about a year in her life as a stripper, who wrote the film based on many of her own high school experiences. The main theme is unplanned teenage pregnancy and subsequent plans for adoption. In the UK, the film is considered suitable for anyone aged 15 or over. My own stance is that women should have the right to choose what to do in cases of pregnancy. This may include abortion. The worksheets may be partially informed by this stance. The worksheets consist of 6 pages. Page 1 introduces the film and the cast. Page 2 consists of a set of questions for students to answer while watching the film, which should be paused periodically to allow students to check their answers with each other and the teacher. Page 3 consists of a list of expressions related to teenage pregnancy, and a True/False quiz, based on the information in two websites. Page 4 consists mainly of a set of discussion questions, relating to teenage pregnancy. Page 5 is a synopsis of the plot of the film, for teacher reference. Page 6 is an answer key to the True/False quiz. As for order of use, I sometimes do Pages 3 and 4 before showing the film, or between sections of the film. Actually, what I normally do is introduce the topic of teenage pregnancy and the film with a projected slideshow (PowerPoint), which I hope to upload as well. Page 4 (discussion questions) is then redundant.
