I teach English in Japan. One of my private students is going to take a working holiday in Australia for one year. She is very excited about her upcoming trip but is having trouble getting things set up over there.
I was wondering if maybe anyone here might be able to point her in the right direction. As I understand it, her main goal for doing this is to improve her English speaking ability and also to be able to gain some foreign work experience.
She needs to find information on where to stay while she is in Australia I.E. a home stay program or a dormitory would be preferable. She also needs to find a quality English School that would help her continue in her English studies. Finally, she needs to secure employment in Australia.
She works here as a commerce and trade specialist. She is a college graduate and speaks Mandarin as well. She is one of my best students and it is a pity to loose her, but I will feel better knowing that she is moving on to a great opportunity.
In Japan there are private agencies set up that will assist those wishing to travel abroad on Working Holiday Visas. These agencies assign one of their "representatives" to arrange all the details of your trip for you; for a sizeable commission fee of course! I don t trust these agencies. They don t care about the people who they are supposedly trying to help; they care only about their commission! Recently, one of these shysters has contacted my student and tried to convince her that her trip would be doomed to end in disaster unless she paid him to help her. He offered her a package deal that included employment in a position which she is clearly overqualified for and told her that attending an English School would be a waste of her time. Fortunately she was able to see right through him and kindly declined his offer.
As her teacher, I feel compelled to help her relocate and ensure that she will be able to get the most out her trip. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
