Dear Teachers:
If you can use "less" with adjectives of 3 or more syllables and with adjetives of 2 syllables but not ending in "Y", then what is it proper to use with one syllable adjectives? I mean, is it correct to say: she is less tall than Mary ???? Or is the only correct possibility to say: she is not as tall as Mary? |

Dear jalomi112,
As far as I know, "less" can be used regardless of the number of syllables. So I think you ve got this sentence, "She is less tall than Mary." correct! :) |

Hi Jalomi and Lovedk,
Here s what I think:
We can use "less" with one syllable adjectives, but it sounds unusual. As an Englishman, I don t speak this way, preferring to use "not as _____ as".
I can t say why, which is annoying me because I like to know the rules, but although I wouldn t say it s wrong, I wouldn t say "she s less tall than Mary".
I d say "she s not as tall".
All the best,
Charles. |
