TWO QUESTIONS FOR EVERYBODY!
|
Hello dear colleagues and friends!
I would like to start a discussion/brainstorming/exchange of opinions, as you wish, on the following two questions:
WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER?
WHAT MAKES/MADE YOU PROUD TO BE A TEACHER?
( I know we are not all teachers here, but I would love to read the opinions of other people, too, at least to the first question)
The special additional challenge/task/plea from me to all of you would be the following: LET S STICK ONLY TO THE POSITIVE - try to state your own opinion, don t slide into the negative (as in a good teacher is...whereas a bad teacher is... or I m proud because...but some people... ) - let s have none of that, please, please, please.... As Thumper says in Bambi - if you have nothing nice to say, better be quiet
thank you in advance - I m so looking forward to reading your answers...

Well, well, well, dear Anita... We should ask our students!!
To be honest, i don t know! I have been teaching for so many years and still don t know what a good teacher is... We can be narcissistic and say: I do this and that to motivate the kids so I am a good teacher but it is not as simple as that!
I was bemused to hear pupils representatives at a class meeting, praising one teacher who, to me is the most traditionnal and boring teacher but very structured in his teaching...... I would not have said he was a good teacher, far from it but there, you see, kids think differently!
I would say that I have tried , in all these years, to be a good teacher.....How? I never give up!! If children don t understand , don t want to learn, I always think: How can I go round this difficulty? I never do the same two years in a row! I always adapt myself to the children I have in front of me .. And I try to be motivated by what I teach, so that I pass the enthusiasm onto them! But it doesn t always work
Good thread Anita.... It will be interesting to read the answers!

Anita, as I told you, right now, in the caf, just one answer; the first one is very difficult, a good teacher must be somehow like the clown in my pic, I mean, sometimes we need to be very good actresses, we must teach, but also listen to, help, take care, pay attention, be kind of a mother/father... you know, a teacher has to be everything, everywhere, always, and simply the best. Now, the 2nd, why am I proud of being a teacher? Simple, because my students just happen to be always the best, you see what I mean, a mother always feels her children are really good ( even if they, sometimes, are not that good ); well, that is exactly what happens to me; my students are always good, so I am proud, I love them and miss them, when we come to holidays, though they usually show up, some now and then.
Thanks, teacher Anita, I hope you give me a fair mark, because I gave a good answer to your second question, didn t I?Let me say, right now, because after my holidays, I will ask you to teach me how to upload a utube, here, ok?
Hugs

I think, it was Ushinskiy, russian edicator, who said that the moment teacher stops learning the teacher in him dies.
I can t really say that something makes me proud to be a teacher. i like to be one now. |

What makes a good teacher - I think one important factor is to understand your students feelings and listen to their opinions. It is also important to be well informed in the subjects we teach. I think a good teacher is someone who give lots of help to students e.g explaining and giving more information about what they are doing. To always make the lesson fun e.g playing some games etc. We should also always make the students feel confident about what they are doing.
What makes me proud to be a teacher - The achievement of my students and the happiness on their faces when they finally are able to communicate, and begin to feel at ease with the language. |

What to add! I am still grateful to the teachers who would undertand me and encourage me, those who tried to "reach" me and support me when it was hard for me to undersand something. Is this the good teacher? To me it was and now I try to follow suit, but it s not that easy.
In my school I have a colleague who is one of my former students. Yes, she is my colleague and she is competent, adored by the children and respected by all the other colleagues. Isn t this a reason to be proud of being a teacher? I know my student is very good because of herself, but I hope that a little bit of "me" may be in her! |

Hi there!!
In my opinion a good teacher is the one who s not only concerned with the linguitic aspect of teaching but also with the human one. I always try my ss to really state if they feel comfortable with the topics or activities or not, therefore I feel that a good teacher should care about his/her ss opinions and interests...Hey! I m not saying I m a perfect teacher, but I really try to take it into account (hard question eh? ha) Also, a good teacher is humble, recognizes that he/she can make mistakes..because in teaching you never stop learning! Not even when you get your degree >>>>This is a positive point of view, don t you think?
And I believe that what makes me feel proud of being a teacher is that I m able to share my knowledge and values with other people. I feel proud of all my ss, even when they don t get the best marks, but I realize they have made an effort
I love this site, and I really enjoy being a member
Thanks for sharing all your creative work
Kisses from Argentina (we come back to classes after so long!)

Hi Anita,
Nice question. Well what else can I say? Everyone has said everything. Id like to add that for me, a good teacher is also one who can adapt. It is very important to be able to adapt to the students, to their level, to the times, to the parents, to ones colleagues, to everyone you come into contact with in a professional way.
There are many things that make me proud: my students achievement and the expression on their faces when they finally comprehend a point which had been giving them trouble; their expressions the first time they communicate with a native speaker sufficiently. I don t think I am the greatest teacher but I do try to work on my relationship with my students. On a personal level, besides my students achievementsI am proud of their attitude towards me. I am exceedingly proud when students I had 7-8 years ago, return from university and call me to invite me to have coffee or pizza with them and talk to me as a friend! I was very proud when a former student sent me this to wish me a Happy Birthday a year ago http://www.slideshare.net/lionnagaraju/what-makes-a-good-teacher and told me I had been many of the things mentioned. But mostly I am simply proud to be in a profession that shapes individuals who will be our future.
