ex. is usually used for example
but as ladybird pointed out if you use ex. 1 (with a number after it) you should
assume that it means exercise. |

I agree with Ladybird. The abbreviation for exercise is Ex
The abbreviation for example is eg. - I have never seen Ex as an abbreviation of example. Maybe it is Canadian? |

E.g. means example and comes from the latin expression "exempli gratia"
Ex. is exercise.
