Question:
How would you complete this sentence?
She wore a beautiful yellow ________ cotton shirt
a) striped b) straight c) tight d) scruffy
To my knowledge the order of adjectives is
opinion, size,age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose
So...whats the answer???? |

Nothing wrong. What you said is correct.
I understood you had to choose the correct adjective for that place and the correct one (in my opinion) is "striped" as it refers to the pattern.
Edit: Do you have to use all the adjectives?

I can �t tell you why, but "yellow striped " is the only one that sounds right to me. We native speakers don �t usually learn the "official" order of adjectives, so I can �t say if it is technically right. |

I �m with Douglas and tere-arg. I wouldn �t know why, just the only one that sounds right. Maybe I should write the order you gave down somewhere. I wouldn �t have been able to come up with the rule like that! |

I agree with everyone else that striped is correct. As to the why, I think it �s because the striped refers not only yo the shirt but to yellow as well. The stripes are yellow- yellow stripped. Of course as a native speaker it also sounds right. By the way Marion, if you want to learn the order look here. It �s called the Royal Order of Adjectives. You can find it here as a chart.
