"Stopped talking" is a compoud verbal predicate that consists of a phasal verb "stop" and a gerund. |

Gerunds can be used as nouns, when they refer to activities and are the subject of the sentence (e.g. Swimming is my favourite sport), but in the context you provide, the gerund is used as a verb (after the verb to stop you need a gerund form, if you have another action - verb). |
