Can you help me with these sentences?
|
Hello! Can anybody help me to fill in these sentences?
1. The didn t let Becca ....... him on because they thought he was too strong an opponent. 2. Don t be so prudish, Becca. I always ........ shorts on in the shop! 3. The letter of apology was too long so Becca ..... it down. 4. You cannot ..... away ...... violence by using violence. 5. I don t know why Becca didn t leave him but I ...... it down ....... a deep fear of change.
Please, don t think I m lazy as I ve been searching for solution for long time and I ve already filled in many other sentences but I have a problem with these five. I cannot find it in any dictionary (or maybe I m searching in a wrong way?). If you can help me, thank you in advance!

These are likely answers for the gaps in my opinion and I am curious to see what others have to say.
1- take him on
2- try them on
3- cut it down
4- keep away from violence
5- put it down to |

Maker is correct BUT number 4 is strange and makes not a lot of sense. Are you sure that it s "away" in the middle of the sentence???

I agree with Zora. I would complete 4 like this
You cannot do away with violence by using violence

Thank you Maria!!!
I couldn t come up with the right phrasal verb for the sentence... I was like "take away... keep away... no, that doesn t sound right!"
Very happy that you provided the most reasonable option!

Hi there!
1. The didn t let Becca TAKE him on because they thought he was too strong an opponent. 2. Don t be so prudish, Becca. I always TRY shorts on in the shop! 3. The letter of apology was too long so Becca PARED it down. 4. You cannot DO away WITH violence by using violence. (strange phrasing, however--usually we say "fix (or fight) violence with violence" and "do away with" when you re killing someone, not a concept! (Ex. The villain did away with the hero by putting poison in his coffee.) 5. I don t know why Becca didn t leave him but I PUT it down TO a deep fear of change.
P.S.-- I cant imagine a dictionary being able to help with this at all--these are very precise idiomatic expressions.

Zoe, wouldn t you agree that "do away with violence" sounds OK if it means to eliminate violence? It sounds good that way to me.
