First Day of Class

Dear Friends,
I m about to start as new term. I would like to ask you all for nice activities I could use on the very first day to catch the students attention and to make them feel comfortable.
Thanks in advance

well, it really depends on your pupils age and level. if they under 12 and have already learnt English for a couple or years you could play this game: bring a teddy bear/a doll, and introduce him/her "Hello, my name is Teddy/Barbie, i m a... I live in... I m ... years old. then introduce yourself to the teddy bear/doll "Hello Teddy/Barbie, my name is Ms..., i m your new English teacher, I live in...". then ask your pupils to introduce themselves to teddy/barbie! My pupils found it funny and less intimidating to talk to the teddy bear than to talk to the whole class.
if they are over 12, you can play this game: bring a small soft ball (not a tennis ball, it s too hard, you will need something softer), take the ball into your hands and introduce yourself. then throw the ball to a pupil, and he/she has to introduce himself/herself, then he/she has to throw the ball to someone else...
otherwise, you have games like "find someone who..." look at my powerpoints, I have a couple of games that could help you!!!
hope it helps!

Hi,
well it depends on the number of students and their level, but whenever I am about to start a class of 2 to 6 students (level elementary and up), I almost always use this "game":
GAME - NOUNS
I print a few cards with some BASIC NOUNS on them and student take turns and explain the words to each other. The one who guesses the explained word correctly then gets the card with the noun.
The winner is the student who has the most nouns at the end of the game. You can play it for 10 minutes, 20 or even 45 minutes. You can play however you like... anything is possible :-)
Students get to know each other better and you can quite easily assess their level of English and the way they can express themselves. We always have a lot of fun :-)
I published TWO LISTS ON NOUNS in PDF on the other site where I contribute (www.helpforenglish.cz).
The whole article (only in Czech): http://www.helpforenglish.cz/tipy-a-triky/c2010011101-GAME---nouns--pomucka-nejen-pro-ucitele-.html
THE TWO LISTS OF BASIC NOUNS:
156 easier nouns (PDF):
http://www.helpforenglish.cz/file.php?id=20_1263658889_nouns_easy
72 nouns which might be a tiny bit more difficult to explain (PDF):
http://www.helpforenglish.cz/file.php?id=20_1263314848_noun_game_03
Hope it helps a bit :-)
