To my ear, "more clever" sounds much better.---- it �s a regional difference. |

Generally, "-er" is correct with 2-syllable adjectives, but "more +" is more common, and sounds better. If the adjective ends in "y" (happy, pretty, etc.), "-ier" is the only correct form. If the adjective has 3 or more syllables, only "more +" is correct. There are probably exceptions that I can �t think of (just after the Super Bowl has ended), but these rules apply in most situations.
