Controversy rages -

Hi Everyone!
How would you explain the word "rage" as in controversy rages? Is it worth telling students it s a collocation?

Oh, I think I may have just found theanswer myself. "continue with great force"
This was the context: "Controversy rages over bullfighting in Spain" I think there s a play on words in there but it s a cultural reference so I doubt students would pick it up. (rage - the film "Raging Bull")
Thanks anyway!

I think the meaning is "Controversy continues strongly over bullfighting in Spain."
Cheers!
