This has always been a bit of a tricky question -
but I see the family as a unit or one group - therefore - the family is.
But if you talk about the members of the family - then you use are.

thanks a lot my friends. sometimes i wish i knew english as a second language because i am a teacher of english and i dont want to be in this kind of situation with my pupils. :(
