Rewriting

Hi everyone, having seen how helpful everyone is here at the forum, I decided to ask for your help myself this time :
This is part of a CAE exercise :
" If we were more cautious we wouldn t have this problem every single day ".
How would you rewrite this sentence beginning with " Were... " ?
I thought  " Were we to be more cautious ... " but I m not completely sure it s ok.
Can you give me your opinion ? Thank you soooo much .

I would say:

Were we more cautious we wouldn t have this problem every single day

Thank you Lindsay, always helpful ... You know why I doubted ? Because if the sentence were :  " If we had more money we would travel "  , wouldn t it be correct to say  :
"Were we to have more money we would travel " ?  (of course, very formal ! )
Or would you say :  " Had we more money we would travel ??"

Both your answer and lshorton99 s answer are correct depending on the level of formality you wish to use. Your answer would be the more formal of the two.

Thank you arlissa, that s what I thought but I wasn t sure !! What would you tell me about my second question ??
Thank you for helping !!Smile

I would say had we more money - Were we to have more money is again much more formal.

I would also say Had we more money.... though both are correct. Regards!

Thanks Lindsay again and compatriota too !  I think I ll stick to the most formal one, as it s usually what s asked in such examinations.

I ve been teaching CAE for quite a while and I ve seen questions like that - the more formal version probably isn t what they ll ask for, although they should accept it!

Just thought I d warn you!

From the many "use of english" papers I ve corrected so far, it seems to me that sometimes they accept both, but I ve also seen some keys where only one answer is accepted and it s usually the formal one.  That s what I thought until you told me your opinion !

Anyway, the problem is this is a book whose key I used to have but lent and lost it and now I can t get another one. That s why I thought I d ask here.
Thank you so much for your time and help !
