Technically, "it is me" is the correct form because "me" is an object pronoun.
"It is I" is not correct because "I" is a subject pronoun.
Some people use it because they are following this rule incorrectly.
We cannot say "She and me are going to the park" but "She and I are going to the park"
People may carry that rule over and think it applies even when the self is the object. |

i think you are mistaken... in this sentence we have a predicate nominative because it is the same as I thus the pronoun is renaming the subject and you need a subject pronoun to do that. in any doubt please read this link

Liz is right about the predicate nominative, so grammatically, it should be "I". However, in practice, at least here in the US, it is much more common to hear "It �s me". It �s not so common either way without the contraction.
