Universal ESL Film Exercises - Tasks

Hello, do you remember my 100 "versatile" reading tasks?
Now I am trying to think about COPY-PASTE ACTIVITIES TO GO WITH any film / ESL mini-videos. These activities would go with any videos, eg. ESL vids accompanying our textbooks (virtually any ESL dvd - from beginner to advanced level and "standard" films...)
CAN YOU THINK OF ANOTHER video EXERCISES???
So far I have "invented":

SUMMARIZING Tasks:
What was the film about? Write a short summary 100-200 words.
What is the gist? Write a 10 word summary of what happened.
Create a timeline of the action and rewrite with Past Perfect.
Draw a storyboard + write short sentences to go with or dialogues.
Make a comics. Erase some speech clouds and S2 guesses. Or jumble them.
Compare with another (similar) story / your past experiences
Write the film/DVD review. Did it help you to learn English? How?
What should be changed? why? how?
Compare the DVD and book (textbook). Which one is better?
News broadcast reporting events from the story.
Letter - write a letter recommending the book for the school dvd library

DESCRIPTION Tasks:
Choose one character and describe his appearance and moral character.
Family tree (tree of friends) of the main character.
What were the characters doing? At the beginning, in the end...
What were the characters wearing? Write descriptions.
What were they talking about? Write a dialogue. Use direct speech.
Report - use indirect speech, indirect questions from the film
The Most List - write the longest list of ... the funniest / saddest / most surprising / silliest / most dangerous moment in the story
Background research on the setting or period / Compare with yours

WORD Tasks:
Write 10 key words - make a spider diagram - mindmap.
Word-hunt - search for past tense / preposition(al phrases) / adverbs..
Find verbs in ..... tense and explain why they are used
Write 10 adjectives to go with the film / episode

IMAGINE - tasks:
Imagine a story with the same title.
Imagine additional dialogues which may fit in the story.
Imagine a new character for the story.
Imagine a interview with the main character. What questions would you ask?
Rewrite / retell the story from the point of view of one of the characters (in 1st person) / Write a diary of the character.
Imagine a letter to (or from) the main character.
Write a prequel / sequel to the film / episode.
Write a different ending to the story, draw a picture and comment it.
Imagine a new title for the dvd.
Imagine a gravestone and eulogy for a character. Draw it.

CREATIVE Tasks:
Make a poster advertising the film.
Advertising campaign for the film.
Act the story. Perform a lost scene from the film.
Act the sequel (prequel).
A puppet show about the story.
Original skit for the story.
Panel debate.
Viewer-on-the-street interview.
Collages representing different characters, painting, poem, diorama.
Diorama of the key scene.
Rewrite the story for younger kids as a picture minibook.
Plan for a party for all the characters.

PAIR-WORK tasks:
Work in pairs and re-tell the story. One sentence at a time.
Retell the story and make small mistakes. S2 shouts "stop!" and corrects.
Make titles to all parts. Mix them. S2 put them in the right order.
Think about one "secret magic word" and say a word connected to it. S2 guesses. You can nod or shake your head only.
Cut the summary in parts and S2 rearranges the story
Think of a topic / statement closely related to the film. Brainstorm ideas why you agree / your partner disagrees. Third student is a jury and decides who is right.
Write true/false statements, S2 nods or shakes his/her head. You correct them.
Question words - make 1 question with how, who, when, why, which, where and what

I can t think of any other just now, but your post is excellent. In fact, it would make a wonderful worksheet, VERY USEFUL for most of us. I think acknowledging the sources would calm down any bickering. Thank you!

Thank you very much for your compliment. It is my work only, no Logman, Macmillian or Cambridge :-D
The only source of these tasks is my previous collection of "universal reading tasks", so I suppose there is no need to acknowledge the sources... :-)) but if you need the source - http://www.eslprintables.com/printable.asp?id=382739#thetop  Here it is... Heart I dont own any activity books accompanying the esl videos, so I dont have any source to "steal from" LOL

and yes, I am planning to share the worksheet at eslprintables...
Maybe some of you, dear friends, are willing to help me to think of some MORE tasks?
I would like to have some MORE WRITING TASKS about the film - tasks for students to write individually (at home)...
Any ideas???

I think your list is fairly comprehensive to be honest - your work is amazing! (I have your 100 reading tasks sheet and look forward to this one when it s finished).

Could you not extend the review idea by asking them to slant it - write a negative review and a postive review.

I don t know if it s too advanced but maybe get them to identify a key moment in the film and how the story would be different if that moment changed - a character made a different decision, something different happened.

Sum up the film in one word? I don t know how possible that would be.

Write as though you were a character in the film. Why did you do what you did - write about your life.

My higher brain functions are not great at the moment - if I think of anything decent, I ll get back to you. Unfortunately, I think you ve already listed every task I ve done with a film!

What about writing a dialogue between the characters?
A part of the video is shown in "mute" and the stds have to write the dialogue they might have just had.
It s a great activity because the dialogue they write canmot contradict the body language.
The dialogues are then read out loud, or acted out and finally, the dialogue in the movie is played for stds to compare with their own version.

20 years later: Imagine what the main characters will be doing in 20 years time.

Say who the sepaker is: you write some lines from the movie, students have to write the name of the character who said those lines. It s very useful for elementary students.
