I forgot my umbrella

Is it correct to say that? Today, I said that myself but later I remembered an old teacher of mine who used to say that we cannot forget "objects". That I should have said, "I left it behind" or "I forgot to take my umbrella" I asked my boss (who is American) and she said it was nonsense, that "I forgot my umbrella" is correct. What do you think? Is it an old-fashioned grammatical rule or is it a translation from Spanish?

I m from the UK and I would definitely say I forgot my umbrella - in fact, I often say it as I am constantly forgetting my umbrella!
I think it s an old rule which isn t used now. People regularly say things like I forgot my keys/mobile phone/purse etc.

I m sure all Native speakers at one time or another have said, I ve forgotten, or I forgot my any object. I think language evolves over time, and some grammar point that would not have been used years ago, has morphed into new phrases. Go for it girl. It sounds OK.

I agree with all of you. I ll add that you can t say "I forgot my umbrella at home", which I have heard from students many times. You say, "I left my umbrella at home" or "I forgot my umbrella".
