Websites Needed

Hi all,
I am going to have my class research their countries, but I am going to have them go to the computer lab to get their information. Does anyone know of any good sites that they can go to?

I will be making a worksheet that askes them to find out about location, money, foods, climate, clothing, etc.

I will send the worksheet tomorrow..
Thanks

The CIA has some interesting info on countries and it s easy to compare countries using their format:  https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html

You can also try Wikipedia, it has lots of facts on different countries.
I have also come across these sites, you might find them useful:

http://www.countryfacts.com/

Have a nice week!

Yeah, this kind of info gathering comes up alot ...

Actually for me ... I won t recommend a website.

You see, it s so easy.

Let s say they want to know what money they use in New Zealand, then I ask them to form the interrogative sentence and type that. It teaches sentence structure in a fun way.

SO ... they simply type "What money do they use in New Zealand?" and BINGO, they click the links or ... often the answer is given in the search results. In this case "New Zealand dollar" comes up second.

Anyway ... hope you like my suggestion.

I always have the computer on in class and use this alot. Once I was shocked when the kids did not know the largest animal in the world "Dinosoar ... Elephant" they said!!!!!!!

SO ... they type "What is the largest animal in the world?" and BINGO!!!! They will never forget that now.

P.S. It s also great for image searches too (see below example)!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instant web searching  is fantastic.

We were doing an article on "Tigers for Sale" either Breaking News or Guardian Weekly and decided to do a google search on buying a tiger. We were amazed that within 5 minutes we found a site and could have purchased our tiger on line instantly. It certainly added interest to our discussion.

Cheers Joy

Darryl_Cameron,
I just typed the same question in Google: "What is the biggest animal in the world?" and was quite amazed to find out about the LONGEST animal in the world, Lineus longissimus! It looks so awful, but what an amazing discovery to share with kids! lol :))
I agree typing questions in Google actually teaches our students to become independent learners.

A great game for higher level students is Google Magic 8-ball .

I don t know if any remembers the magic 8-ball. For those of you who don t it was a black ball and you would ask it a yes know question and shake it. It had a shape floating in it with different answers on different sides - for example, Maybe doesn t look hopeful No way etc. It was great fun!

Google magic 8-ball works in a similar way. The students ask any question - Will I pass my FCE exam for example. They type it into google. They then have to interpret the first answers - with that question, the second page that came up had a description saying

I passed my FCE exam with an A too. I am extremely happy ... I am happy that you passed the exam,I could pass the FCE but I was so scared ...

They could interpret this as a positive result.

It s a relly silly game but lots of fun and encourages debate and speculation!
