the difference between "but" and "whereas"
|
Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me the difference between using "but" and "whereas" to express contrast. I feel that there is a slight difference between the two, but I m not sure of it. Ithink that we use but when the subject is the same in the two clauses. and we use whereas when there are different subjects in the two clauses.
eg: I listen to classic music but I can t stand heavy music.
I listen to classic music, whereas my brother likes hip hop music.
I don t know if I am right or wrong. I need your help, please. |

Whereas specifies something is to the contrary, more than but, really states that there is a difference or a conflict.
