If I am not mistaken, it is LADYBIRD in England and LADYBUG in America. I �m not sure about Australia and New Zealand, though.

Ladybirds (UK, Ireland, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Malta, parts of Canada) and Ladybugs (North America).
Scientists increasingly prefer the names ladybird beetles or lady beetles, as these insects are not bugs. (from answers.com)

I agree with Minka.
The word "ladybird" is BE. The Americans say "ladybug".
I personally prefer LADYBIRD!! |

Both are fine and young kids must know both because they are in differnt nursery rhymes.
I agree with previous posts on the BE / AmE. Just wanted to say
It �s a ..... Coccinella septempunctata
And ... did you know they are named after the Virgin Mary?
And .... they are vicious killers of the insect world! |
