Help in explaining

Dear Colleagues,

I ve got the following sentence:

The princes visited many ill/sick children in the hospital.

How shall I explain that sick is the correct word here. Is it because the sentence is about a group of people?
I always check several dictionaries before asking you but now I just don t know a good answer.
Thanks a lot  in advance.

Maybe you can tell your students that before nouns, "sick" word should be used instead of "ill".
