In the state

Hi!
Yesterday I asked for help to explain the phrase in the state (something connected with shopping) (http://www.eslprintables.com/forum/topic.asp?id=19090
Thanks for trying to help but I didn t get an explanation. I have to ask for help again.
I have to describe and compare two pictures(one is a department store and other is a small shop) using the words: modern, convenient, in the state, well-stocked, expensive, cheap, busy, old fashioned and many others. They are not messy. So, what does this phrase mean?
Thank you very much.

You don t "have to" do anything . Asking for help (a second time from the same people) in a more graceful manner might serve you better.
Clearly your explanation isn t enough. Can you scan and upload the page to ifile.it so we can download it and see what you mean? It sounds like either a mistake or the U.S. state (e.g. This is the biggest department store in the state) as mentioned by someone previously. p.s. Google "in the state" (in inverted commas) and it will generally bring up the U.S. State meaning. Is it a U.S. textbook?
best wishes, Someone

In the state could mean in a certain condition. The store was in the state of being remodeled. |

Alyona, all the other words you ve given are adjectives (well-stocked, expensive, cheap, busy, old fashioned) whereas in the state certainly isn t and makes no sense in the context. Who provided you with the pictures and word list originally? A shot in the dark: it s a misprint for state of the art ...

Alex
